Reality television is full of people seeking their fifteen minutes of fame, and while it is easy to judge them while holding the remote control, very few people can resist the allure of national attention.
Wonder where I’m going with this? Well let me tell you, as a PR professional if you are doing your job well your clients are garnering a lot of attention (your welcome Mr and Mrs. Client.) Whether it be in print, television, radio, or on-line people are starting to take notice of your clients and of you. Although this is great news it is easy to get swept up in the attention and forget that it’s not about you but about your client.
Sean Combs, Puff Daddy, P Diddy, Diddy, Swag or whatever you want to call him is considered a great entertainer and producer. He has produced such greats as Mary J. Blige and The Notorious B.I.G, and those looking to make it in the business would give their right arm to be signed to his label. Hoever it is my opinion that Diddy is more about promoting himself than he is about promoting his artists. His larger than life persona tends to take center stage, but it is because of his larger than life persona that up and coming artists want to be signed to Bad Boy.
Do people know more about you than they do about your clients? This shouldn’t be. Of course you want to attract business, but you should use your skills for good not evil. You can’t get caught up in the publicity you set up for your clients. Don’t get me wrong I am not suggesting you blend into the background like a wall flower by all means make opportunities don’t wait for them, but when working on a project that is not the time to make it about you. Your work will speak for itself and your clients will speak for you.
