Who’s Who: Une Autre Naturelle

A black woman’s hair is her crown and glory, one she takes very seriously.  Whether it be a weave, wig, perm, locks, or braids you don’t want to mess with a black woman’s hair.  Often the transition from chemical to natural is very difficult, and maintaining that style can seem very over whelming especially if you are a working mother.  Une Autre Naturelle is a website dedicated to help working mom’s maintain their natural tresses and that of their little ones.

Between 2006 and 2011 the sales of chemical relaxers dropped by 17%, and hair care companies are beginning to take notice by creating products for natural hair.  Une Autre Naturelle in French means Another Natural, but this website is anything but another website.  Created in 2010 by founder Daphne Leblanc, it was her intention to share with friends and family her new look after combing out her locks, as she puts it “I just started the site for fun.”  What started out as fun has grown to include contest give-aways, product testing, and photos.

Une Autre Naturelle’s growth in popularity is nothing to laugh at, Daphne is a wife, mother of three, and a working woman.  She has garnered over 500 fans on Facebook and 1200 followers on Twitter.  What makes this site different from the other hair sites is Une Autre Naturelle is for the busy mom. What makes this site so unique is the fact that it not only shares tips and styles for women—and men—it also provides pointers on styling little girls with natural hair.

A number of studies have been done on how little black girls view themselves, most hating their looks and their hair. The majority of black women have horror stories of sitting between their mother’s, grandmother’s, or aunt’s legs as she mercilessly pulled and tugged at their hair to braid it or make a pony-tail, all while threatening them to sit still and stop crying.  Une Autre Naturelle shares stories and instructions of the best way to style the locks for the little ones and showing them the beauty of who they truly are.
