“Bridge-gate” has captured the attention of the nation and the man in the center of the storm is the ever polarizing and outspoken NJ Governor, Chris Christie. In his January 9th press conference, Governor Christie spoke about being blindside the previous morning after receiving a call from his communications director informing him that the story had broken on the Bergen Record website. But who is that person that made that daunting call? She is no other than Maria Comella, one of Politico’s 50 Politicos to Watch.
Maria Comella may have one of the toughest PR jobs in politics: communications director for New Jersey’s famously shoot-from-the-hip governor, Chris Christie.
The 32-year-old is, as much as anyone can be, Christie’s filter. It’s a task that demands an even-keel demeanor and an ability to take the long view when Christie’s blunt-spoken style causes controversy, as it often does. Comella’s fans say she brings that and a lot more to the job.
“She’s the best communications professional in America right now on the Republican side,” said Mike DuHaime, a senior Christie adviser who first worked with Comella on George W. Bush’s 2004 reelection campaign and later on Rudy Giuliani’s 2008 presidential bid.
