The power of social media is one that must be wielded with precision and skill, it can make or break a celebrity and it has just ask Paula Deen, or former Travel Channel host Adam Richman. Johnny “Football” Manziel has been playing fast and loose with his free time and it is all being recorded on social media.
Manziel is not the first athlete to immensely enjoy the spoils of his success, and he will not be the last, but he is one that is coming of “celebrity age” during the time of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and any others you want to name and they are all on our smart phones. Smart phones that are being carried around by your local bus boy, valet, stripper, bartender, all waiting for the chance to make a few dollars off his misfortune.
Johnny Manziel is one of those people where there is no grey area when it comes to ones feelings about him, you either like him or you don’t. Even before he was drafted there was a rift in the football stratosphere between those that thought he was the next thing since Payton Manning and those that thought he was the next thing since Tim Tebow. That fact that he bragged about his great talent and made demands about where he should be drafted only exacerbated his spoiled rich boy image many had of him.
Social Media is not a beast that you can fight it is one that must be handled with care. Pictures you were proud of one day will bring you shame the next. The same people Manziel is partying with are the same ones that will lose his number if he makes more interceptions than passes.
Manziel says his weekends are his and he can do what he wants with it. I hate to break it to you little Johnny but that is not necessarily so. During combines you were poked, prodded, measured, weighed, and taken out for a test run to see if you were “worth the money.” You didn’t choose the Browns the Browns chose you, despite any phone calls you may have made. Once picked you signed a contract, I hope you read it all because if coach Mike Pettine feels like it he can have you riding the bench like a champion show rider and there is very little you can do about it.
No employer wants an employee that will make the company look bad, and especially not one that cannot show up on a Monday morning and get their work done. Johnny Manziel recently committed the ultimate faux pas by posing with troubled pop star Justin Bieber and other celebs. Bieber’s image is so tarnished right now there is a petition to deport him back to
Canada. Manziel is thumbing his nose up at his critics who want to be his mommy and tell him when to come home, eat his dinner, and go to bed but like my mother used to say “they will learn when they catch their tail” if you don’t know what that means it means like a dog that chases its tail it will learn how dumb an idea that was once he chomps down. When social media turns on Manziel—and it will because it always does—he will learn when he chomps down.
