Ever sit and go over your life? As you get older that tends to happen more often with longer moments of reflection. You wonder how life would have been different if you went down that road, how life would have been different if you didn’t grab that opportunity. You think about the people you know and the ones that you’ve lost, and with the increased use of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter we can now make life look like we want– to the outside anyway. But I ask you what defines you? Who defines you? What is your value?
The initial punishment delved out to Ray Rice and later his suspension from the National Football League (NFL) for his abuse on Janay Palmer had less to do with Palmer and more to do with the sponsors. She is worth as much as the sponsors says she is worth, her dignity is worth as much as the sponsors say it is worth, her life is worth as much as the sponsors say it is worth. If you don’t value yourself the world will put a value on you and believe me when I tell you it is never as much as you’re really worth. During moments like this everyone dissects the situation whether it be for ratings or because it is a true passion, however behind every headline is a person. In abuse the first thing the abuser does it strip the victim of their value and give them a new definition of who they are. If a person has heard their entire life they are nothing and they deserve nothing that is what they will accept. Psalms 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
What defines you Is it your pretty face or your big behind? Is it the person on your arm, the title you’re called by, the number of friends that you have? All of these things can change, so how do you define you? What are you worth? Companies want to know how you define yourself, that way they can sell you to the highest bidder. If you define yourself cheap they will sell you cheap. Little girls are being coerced to look like grown women under the notion of “that is the style” already being told at a young age “this is what you are worth and this is what you will always be worth.” II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
We look at magazines, videos, and movies and if not careful we walk away believing that is what we are supposed to look like, act like, and sound like. Niki Minaj reached out to her old high school LaGuardia Arts High School in hopes of speaking and encouraging students however was turned down because she wanted to bring cameras. I am curious to know what she planned to say to encourage young girls to look past their looks, be a leader and not a follower, and that their value is wrapped up in their out layers. What did she plan to say to young men who see nothing more than her “Anaconda?” How did she plan to encourage men to help strengthen their brothers and sisters instead of tearing them down? What definition did she intend to place on our young men and women? We look at magazines, videos, and movies and if not careful we walk away believing that is what we are supposed to look like, act like, and sound like. Beauty and good looks is not a sin it is not something that someone should be made to feel guilty or ashamed about, if God blessed you with looks Amen! if Mary Kay helps with your looks Amen! but I ask you…What defines you? What is your value? John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
