I am the first to admit that at times I am bad with names. People soon become sweetie, pumpkin, or worse yet heeeeey. The skill to remember a person’s name are often expounded upon at conferences and taught as parlor tricks in how-to books because they say it is very vital especially in business and networking. Please don’t ask me who THEY are.
I believe everyone is worth knowing, a persons name is important to them and should be important to us not only because of what they can do for us. In biblical times a name was given to bless, curse, or tell a story, so there is a lot that goes along with a name .
In any field of business your customer or client doesn’t only deserve quality they also deserve respect. How far will you get if you know all the intricacies of the company but not the name of the CEO? Not very far. Startup’s often spend a lot of time and money in search of the perfect name for their company or product because that can make or break them. Anyone remember the problems the Chevy Nova automobile had being marketed in Latin America? In Spanish “no va” means “it doesn’t go”. Ackward!
Also let’s not dismiss someone’s name because it is difficult to pronounce due to the fact that they of a different nationality, you are dismissing a large piece of who they are. When you take the time out to get to know a persons name you are letting them know that they are worth knowing, even if they lack the finances, degree, or status that society says makes them “worth” knowing. Think about how you felt when you found out that the guy or girl you were crushing on knew your name or called you by the wrong one . Or when your boss actually pronounced your name correctly and apologizes when they don’t. In the bible many people were given new names by God. Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sara, Jacob to Israel, Saul to Paul, and both The Virgin Mary (Matthew 1:23) and Zacharias (Luke 1:13) were told what to name their unborn babies. There is a lot that goes along with a name .
There is a line from William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet that reads “A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet,” and although that may be true call a child a loser long enough and see what they become, call them victorious and watch what happens, call them a child of God and watch them soar. I ask you What is in a name? Everything.
